  SUMMIT PUBLIC RADIO MINUTES

County Commons Mt. Royal Room, 5:45 PM, 27 August 2007

In Attendance: Sue Greene (presiding), Gary Peterson, John Roberts, Don Dettmering,  Steve Smith,  Sally Liu, Eric Degerberg,  Ellis Simon, Marsha Cooper,  John Mirro, Pat Spitzmiller, Roger Paluska, Sue Paluska, Renee Stoller, and guests: Marilyn Simon, Neil Best, and Larry Selzle.

Minutes for the last (23 July) meeting had been e-mailed to the board and were approved.

I. OLD BUSINESS

 A. FINANCE: The treasurer's report had been  e-mailed to the Board and there was no discussion.

 B. MEMBERSHIP: Don's report had been e-mailed to the board. Marsha Cooper announced that a full-page ad will be in the SDN              on the 29th and that the SPR logo will be in color.

C: FUTURE of RADIO: Sue Greene introduced Neil Best, General Manager of KUNC, and Larry Selzle, Chief Engineer of        KUNC. Neil discussed his views on the future of radio in general. His discussion centered around three main themes:

           1) Radio is affordable (inexpensive) for broadcasters and is free to listeners.

           2) The platform for radio (FM, IPODS, Satellite, or whatever) is changing and will continue to evolve in unknown ways.

           3) Broadcasters must concentrate on the content (programming)  which will be increasingly important.

There followed an open discussion among all present concentrating on what the strategy for SPR (maybe jointly with KUNC) should be in the near future in light of the FCC frequency allocation opening coming  soon.  All agreed we need to make several filings for frequencies in order to protect the licenses we now have and are using. Others may obtain licenses to build full-power stations on frequencies so close to ours that we will be completely blanked by them. The Board indicated by a show of hands that we and KUNC must cooperate soon on engineering studies and filings in the best interest of both of us.  No firm dates for follow-on meetings were set by the end of the meeting.
