Don Dettmering has a long history in Summit county. He first purchased property here in 1972 together with friends, using the proceeds from the sale of property in Michigan. Don attended Duke University and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1963. He then went on to receive a Master’s degree from Purdue University in Industrial Administration. This led to a solid career, working for IBM for the next 30 years, holding positions in Systems Engineering, Sales, Product Planning and New Product Development. He met his lovely wife, Diana, in 1965 while on a business trip to Columbus, Ohio.
Before moving to Breckenridge full-time 10 years ago, Don and Diana lived in Boca Raton, Florida for 16 years. He still returns to that area from time to time to visit his 97 year old mother who lives in West Palm Beach.
Don’s favorite place in the world is Colorado, where golf and skiing keep him very busy. He considers the rest of the world to be “just good fun to visit”, and a lot of fun he’s had. Last year he visited Peru and Turkey, and this year he plans to travel to Italy, the Mediterranean, and Brazil.
Don remembers the early days of Summit Public Radio, when it was the only way to get TV reception in the county. Then radio became a “pleasant addition”. He had several friends who were on the board, and thought SPR would be a worthwhile volunteer activity. Since then, he has been both a general member of the board as well as Vice-President of Membership Database Management. Don has long had the desire to assist SPR in any way possible. He feels that the biggest challenge for SPR today is to understand the most productive way to use modern technology to improve the availability of listening and viewing media in Summit County. With Don’s talent and interest, the board will surely be guided down a productive and positive path.
