SPR is very fortunate to have
Tom Scanlan as a member of its board. His talent as an
electrical engineer has greatly facilitated SPR in its efforts to bring
digital television to Summit County. Tom
has always had an interest in Electrical Engineering from the time he
was a child. At the age of 15, he was installing TV antennas while other
kids on the block were delivering newspapers. Even today, he feels he is
very lucky to have been able to work in a profession that he truly loved
and enjoyed. Tom
went to the University of Connecticut for 2 years, then completed his BA
at Michigan State. He went on to receive his MS at the University of
Southern California and did coursework toward a PhD at Michigan State.
During this time, he studied not only Electrical Engineering but also
Broadcasting, Broadcast Management, and Mass Media. Tom
met his wife, Sue, on August 18, 1988, at the workplace in Traverse
City, Michigan.
They have 2 children, Jeff, 35, who is
married and lives in Centennial, and Jessica, 32, who is married and
lives in Englewood. Jessica has one daughter, making Tom and Sue very
proud grandparents. Tom
first became interested in Summit County while traveling from Michigan
to business meetings in the West. From 1986 to 1988, he lived in
Conifer. Since the kids loved to ski, and since they all loved the area,
Tom and Sue decided in 2004 to purchase property and build a house. By
March 2006, the house was completed and Tom and Sue became full-time
Summit County residents. This did not negate going back to Michigan to
visit many old friends, enjoy some of the wonderful summer weather
there…..and not to forget the great hockey games either!
Besides returning to Michigan occasionally, Tom and Sue often hit the
road with their camper, and within 18 months, visited the Pacific
Northwest and Glacier National Park, spent 2 months in Florida, went to
Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson Bay with their granddaughter, and also
took 2 trips to Barbados. They certainly don’t stay put for long!
Besides traveling, Tom enjoys sports such as hockey, football, baseball,
tennis, and running. Above all, however, Tom enjoys social activities,
especially when that involves relaxing with his family or being with
good friends.
Since moving to Summit County, Tom has taken part in various activities. He has volunteered for several duties at the USAF Museum, Peterson AFB. He is also a member of the USAF Radar Veterans Association, and the AFN Veterans Association. He first became interested in SPR through an advertisement in the Summit Daily News and saw a need in the engineering area, especially for digital television. He joined the board last year and participates on the technology committee. His goal for SPR is to bring free, high quality digital television from Denver into Summit County via translators.
